Amanda Bossard was just out of high school when she started her studies in marine biology at Alaska PacificUniversity in Anchorage. Bossard started her commercial fishing career in 1999, when she was hired on board the F/V Sunset. This 65' schooner that was converted into the role of a salmon tender is operated by Murat Aritan. The fisherman has been in commercial fisherman since 1993. Bossard was married to Aritan in 1999. The two have joined to fight for their business. They both believe in conserving as well as profiting from sustainable resources within the fishing industry. Otolith is a direct wholesale seafood distributor that was started within Philadelphia in 2007 by a now-mother of two young children: Bella age 3 and Andre aged 1. She and her husband are separated by five months, and she is able to focus on her financial goals and environmental concerns. Bossard together with Isabella and Andre (ages 12 and 10 respectively) return each year, starting in July 2016, to Southeast Alaska for the summer catch of wild salmon. They use hooks and line to collect their fish, and then join Aritan to sell to local processors for 2 months. Then they continue to grow their direct seafood sale via Otolith Sustainable Seafood.
